The North American Measles Outbreak of 2025

You have heard about the measles outbreaks in Texas, Canada, and Mexico, but did you know that they were all linked?

That’s right, the same strain of measles virus is causing many of these cases in what could be called one big measles outbreak in North America.

The North American Measles Outbreak of 2025

But hasn’t measles been eliminated in North America?

Yes!

But eliminated isn’t the same as eradicated, and that’s why we still get cases when someone who is unvaccinated travels out of the area, gets sick, and brings measles back home. Or someone who is sick travels here.

And while you can debate how these outbreaks started, one thing seems certain, they don’t seem to be slowing down.

In Canada, for example, there are at least 2,755 cases of measles in 9 jurisdictions.

Most of the measles cases in Canada are in Alberta and Ontario, but more cases are popping up in other parts of Canada too.

Fortunately, there have been no deaths in Canada, but up to 8% of the cases have required hospitalization.

“The outbreak was initiated by an internationally imported case that attended a large gathering in New Brunswick in October 2024, which included attendees from multiple provinces.”

Measles – Region of the Americas

Not surprisingly, almost all the cases are in folks who are unvaccinated.

As are the cases in Mexico, where an outbreak has also continued to grow.

There have been 5 deaths, including four unvaccinated children in the measles outbreak in Mexico.

There are now over 4,100 suspected cases of measles in Mexico. An outbreak that is getting bigger and spreading to more parts of the country.

And where there have been five deaths!

The latest death, an almost three-year-old unvaccinated girl in Chihuahua.

“So far, it has been revealed that the victim belonged to the
Rarámuri community, was the daughter of agricultural laborers, and had not received her full vaccination schedule.”

Another minor dies of measles in Chihuahua; the death toll in the state rises to four.

An outbreak in Mexico that had spread from the measles outbreak in Texas

The great majority of measles cases in North America are linked to Mennonite communites in Ontario, Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Michigan, Kansas, and Chihuahua.

A measles outbreak that appears to be picking up steam again, as do other outbreaks across the United States.

Measles outbreaks that have killed three people (Texas and New Mexico), including two children.

Remember when RFK Jr said it was hard to kill a healthy child with measles? And yet, six children are dead after acquiring measles in the North American measles outbreaks.

Measles outbreaks that won’t stop until more people ignore anti-vaccine influencers and get vaccinated and protected, which can include getting kids early doses of the MMR vaccine in high risk situations.
